Way back in 2010, Ellen signed up to star in the feature film adaptation of the Oscar winning documentary short “Freeheld,” with Peter Sollett coming on to direct in 2012. And then nothing was heard of the project again, until now.
The long-awaited Ellen Page project “Freeheld” is finally coming together, as Julianne Moore is attached to play her lesbian lover in the indie drama, which will also star Zach Galifianakis, who will play Steven Goldstein, a New Jersey-based equality activist.
“Freeheld” tells the inspiring true story of Stacie Andree (Page) and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester (Moore), a devoted couple whose world is shattered when Laurel becomes terminally ill and government officials prevent her from assigning her pension benefits to Stacie.
Laurel’s conservative partner, Detective Dane Wells, is shocked when he learns of Laurel’s orientation, but becomes the leader in the fight for gay rights. Based on the Oscar-winning 2007 documentary directed by Cynthia Wade, “Freeheld” is a universal story of civil rights, friendship and the courage to love.
Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg are producing alongside Kelly Bush Novak of Vie Entertainment, Jim Stern of Endgame Entertainment, Jack Selby of Incognito Pictures and Cynthia Wade, who directed the 2007 documentary short.
Ahead of the EFM, Celsius Entertainment has boarded sales on writer-director Patricia Rozema’s (Mansfield Park) apocalyptic/eco drama Into the Forest, set to star Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood.
Page also produces the Canadian feature, based on Jean Hegland’s novel of the same name, which begins filming this coming April on Vancouver Island.
Into The Forest recounts the story of two sisters, played by Page and Wood, struggling to survive after the collapse of society in the not too distant future.
Producers are Page and Karine Martin, executive producers are Sriram Das, Kelly Bush Novak and Haroon Saleem. Mediabiz will co-finance.
